Verify before buying or building
Re-measure the actual work area and verify every marked position before buying material, cutting, drilling, fastening, demolishing, or installing. Existing walls, floors, roofs, fences, and framing may be bowed, damaged, out of square, nonuniform, or different from nominal dimensions.
Confirm the calculator’s measurement basis. Clear span, overall length, exposed width, actual board width, center-to-center spacing, edge gap, and overhang are different measurements and are not interchangeable.
Rounding, fractions, and tolerances
Displayed fractions are rounded to the selected precision while calculations may retain greater internal precision. Repeated rounding can accumulate across a layout. Whenever practical, mark each position from one verified origin instead of stepping from the previous mark.
Allow for tool accuracy, blade kerf, material movement, installation gaps, fastener placement, finish thickness, and the tolerances specified by the product manufacturer and project documents.
Structural and code limitations
Unless a calculator expressly states a narrow prescriptive basis, it does not evaluate structural capacity. Even a span or sizing result based on an IRC table may be inapplicable because of local amendments, species or grade, wet-service conditions, treatment incising, loads, connections, bearing, blocking, lateral restraint, cantilevers, geometry, or other conditions.
Contact the local building department to confirm the adopted code edition, amendments, permits, design criteria, and inspections. Use a qualified design professional when required or whenever the conditions fall outside a calculator’s stated scope.
Utilities, hazardous conditions, and safe work
Before cutting, drilling, digging, or fastening, locate utilities and concealed electrical, plumbing, gas, mechanical, and structural components. Follow applicable locate-service requirements and do not rely only on a visual diagram or consumer detector.
Follow manufacturer instructions and recognized safety practices for tools, ladders, roofs, excavation, fall protection, dust, treated lumber, electrical work, and personal protective equipment. Stop work if conditions are unstable, damaged, energized, pressurized, unfamiliar, or otherwise unsafe.
Products, quantities, and waste
Material estimates do not guarantee availability, suitability, coverage, yield, or a final purchase quantity. Package sizes, usable board dimensions, defects, cuts, color matching, waste, fastening schedules, and return policies vary. Verify the estimate against the exact products and installation instructions before ordering.
No site inspection or warranty
