Even board-and-batten spacing is not simply wall width divided by the number of battens. The battens occupy real width, and the number of visible gaps changes depending on what happens at the wall edges. Settle those decisions before doing the arithmetic.

1. Measure the actual layout area

Measure the width where the battens will be seen, not automatically from drywall corner to drywall corner. Door and window casing, inside corners, cabinets, and other trim may define better visual boundaries. Check the width near both the top and bottom; use the project plan to decide how an out-of-square wall will be handled.

2. Measure the finished batten face

Nominal lumber dimensions are not reliable input. Measure the material after milling or use the manufacturer’s published finished face width. Paint buildup is usually insignificant for layout, but routed or overlapping profiles may change the visible width that matters.

3. Decide what happens at both edges

With a batten at each outer edge, ten battens create nine open spaces. Without edge battens, ten battens create eleven open spaces: nine internal gaps plus two outer gaps. If the outer gaps should be half the internal gap, use a center-to-center layout instead.

4. Calculate the clear gap

Subtract the total width occupied by battens from the usable layout width. Divide the remainder by the correct number of spaces. Keep more decimal precision than your tape measure can show; rounding is for display and marking, not for intermediate calculations.

5. Mark every position from one origin

Choose the left layout boundary as zero. Calculate or copy the left edge or center of every batten from that point. Do not place the second batten by measuring from the first, then the third from the second. Repeating a rounded interval allows small errors to add up.

  1. Mark the left boundary and verify the right boundary.
  2. Transfer every calculated center mark from the left boundary.
  3. Use a level or laser to extend the marks vertically.
  4. Temporarily tape or lightly pencil the full layout.
  5. Step back and inspect how it meets doors, outlets, corners, and furniture.
  6. Verify the final mark before cutting or fastening.

Handling outlets and other obstacles

A purely equal layout may place a batten over a receptacle or switch. Do not modify electrical boxes or conceal required access based on a visual calculator. Common design responses include changing the batten count, introducing deliberate margins, or adjusting the broader trim plan. Electrical changes belong with a qualified person and applicable code requirements.

Buying material

Multiply full-height batten count by installed height to find linear material, then add an allowance appropriate to the product, grade, available stock lengths, and project complexity. A simple percentage does not model every cutoff; create a cut plan before purchasing expensive material.
